BreakingNews.com sets traffic record: Our biggest day remains the Japanese tsunami, but a surprising earthquake that shook the East Coast set a new kind of traffic record for us: the most simultaneous visits to BreakingNews.com. Here are some other interesting stats from a busy news day:
- Earthquake tweets from @breakingnews were retweeted approximately 8,000 times over a two-hour period.
- We posted 67 updates on the quake over the course of two hours, including the best photos and videos we curated from Twitter and YouTube.
- We received well over 1,000 Facebook chat posts alongside our BreakingNews.com coverage from people reporting where they felt the quake.
And here’s my favorite factoid from the folks of Twitter: people in New York saw tweets about the quake from DC nearly 30 seconds before they felt it. “We can’t speak to the speed of seismic waves,” says Twitter, “but a Tweet can reach your followers in less than a second.”
